The calendar has flipped to July, and new anime has already started! Let’s take a look at some of the interesting offerings this season and what we might be covering here at Clouded.
Heya, C here (that’s right, a short form of a pseudonym. I can do whatever I want). Spring just flew by, and even with a bit of a break between the end of that season and the start of summer, new anime is upon us! Most of the plot summaries are via ANN. Go check out their comprehensive list of upcoming and recent anime to see everything there is to watch this season. Here we will be checking out some of the most interesting sounding series of the summer 2017 anime season.
Plot Summary: Yoshiko, is a high school girl who is so ridiculously stupid everyday that even her childhood friend Takkun wants to give her a big punch.
Well if that isn’t a simple premise, I’m not sure what is. Although the series seems completely stupid in its own right, there needs to be at least one comedy to lighten the mood, and there seems to be none better than this oddball for the summer season.
Plot Summary: At Hyakkaō Private Academy, the sons and daughters of the wealthiest of the wealthy engage in a unique curriculum geared to teach them to how to read their opponents. Specifically, students have a rigorous curriculum of gambling where the winners live like kings, and the losers are put through the wringer. When Yumeko Jabami enrolls, she’s decides to teach the students what a real high-roller looks like.
From what I’ve seen of this so far, it looks like a real wild ride. The facial expressions alone are so ridiculous that I can’t help but watch to see more. The themes of gambling and power are also quite intriguing, so hopefully the story can hold up.
Made in Abyss
Plot Summary: An enormous pit and cave system called the “Abyss” is the only unexplored place in the world. Strange and wonderful creatures reside in its depths, and it is full of precious relics that current humans are unable to make. The mysteries of the Abyss fascinate humans, and they head down to explore. The adventurers who venture into pit are known as “Cave Raiders.” A little orphan girl named Rico lives in the town of Ōsu on the edge of the Abyss. Her dream is to become a Cave Raider like her mother and solve the mysteries of the cave system. One day, Rico starts exploring the caves and discovers a robot who resembles a human boy.
This is likely the most intriguing entry on the list. Although it features a rather cartoony vibe that isn’t my usual interest, the art direction looks amazing. Not only that, but the premise and story are quite different from the recent offerings that it not only seems a breath of fresh air visually, but also in its story. I’m always looking for a new experience from anime, and this might be the find of the season.
Vatican Miracle Examiner
Plot Summary: To detect lies, refuse fakes, and reach the miracle of God – that is their mission as Vatican Miracle Examiners. Hiraga, a scientific genius and Roberto, an expert on the decryption of cryptography and ancient documents are not only good partners but also “Miracle Examiners” working for the Vatican. They are secret examiners, who are requested to examine and identify the authenticity of miracles from all over the world.
Although another cool concept, my concern here is that it ends up similar to other dark series of late like 91 Days and Gangsta. Shows that were decent, but also felt either too familiar or quite overwrought respectively. On the other hand, it could turn out to be an exciting adventure seen through a dark religious lens.
Other Interesting Series
Princess Principal – Five girls live in 19th century London, a city within the Albion Kingdom divided into east and west by a large wall. The girls serve as undercover spies enrolled as students at the prestigious Queen’s Mayfair school. This certainly seems like an interesting concept. But what really piques my interest is that the music will be composed by the amazing Kajiura Yuki (.hack//SIGN, My-HiME, Sword Art Online).
New Game!! – The second season of the wildly popular game development anime. I have yet to see the first season and therefor will not be watching this right away, but it is something I would likely be interested in.
In Another World With My Smartphone – The name pretty much says it all with this light novel adaptation. If you’ve been following me here at Clouded for any amount of time, you might know that I have a love to hate relationship with ‘trapped in another world’ anime. Since Re;Zero’s pretty average execution and Konosuba‘s absolutely amazing parody, how much room is their for anything new in this genre right now, serious or comedic? Also, how the heck is he going to charge his cell phone after a day or two!?
Nora, Princess, and Stray Cat – Nora Handa is a high school boy who meets a girl named Patricia in a park who claims to be a princess of the underworld. Patricia and Nora accidentally kiss, and this act turns Nora into a black cat. Well if that isn’t anime 101, I’m not sure what is. Seems like an interesting premise for another cat-based series with extremely brief episodes (5 minutes). Maybe I just like cats and ridiculously cute character designs.
Classroom of the Elite – Kōdo Ikusei Senior High School is a leading prestigious school with state-of-the-art facilities where nearly 100% of students go on to university or find employment. Kiyotaka Ayanokōji is a student of D-class, which is where the school dumps its “inferior” students in order to ridicule them. For a certain reason, Kiyotaka was careless on his entrance examination, and was put in D-class. After meeting Suzune Horikita and Kikyō Kushida, two other students in his class, Kiyotaka’s situation begins to change. Despite the popularity recently of tiered classroom systems and the misadventures of the lowest caste, I haven’t been really taken with any of them.
Fate/Apocrypha – There was once a Holy Grail War waged by seven Mages and Heroic Spirits in a town called Fuyuki. However, a certain Mage took advantage of the chaos of World War II to steal a Holy Grail. Several decades have passed, and the Yggdmillennia family, who took upon the Holy Grail as its — OK to be honest, I haven’t seen any other Fate series and this isn’t going to be the first. Some day I’ll probably catch up.
