Dragon Ball Super 88

The tournament is, of course, still not here yet. In the mean time, Gohan resumes his training with Piccolo to focus his old powers.

“Gohan and Piccolo – Teacher and Pupil Clash in Max Training!”

The lead-up to the Tournament of Power continues this episode with the recruitment of Piccolo and the training of Gohan. It’s another call-back to the good old days, watching this classic teacher-student relationship unfold. Too bad it’s gotten a little stale by this point. How much more does Piccolo really have to teach him, and how powerful is Gohan really? It seems that he has much more power in store to show off when the time comes, but here we really get a whole lot of the same. It almost looked as if he were about to turn in to super saiyan blue or something, but he actually kind of downgraded to focused normal saiyan instead. If there is a likely advancement for him without going god, I expect to see a transformation to super saiyan 3 during the tournament, especially if fighting another saiyan from Universe 6.

Speaking of other saiyans, the look in to Cabba’s efforts and the tease for the new female saiyan are likely the highlights of this episode. Caulifla looks like an interesting character on her own, but I can imagine that the interactions between her, Cabba, and the Universe 7 saiyans will be quite something. We haven’t seen a truly evil or at least morally ambiguous saiyan in quite some time! Dadgeta (…Vegeta) is so comically different from his old self that it is about time we get a darker saiyan back in the mix. If the OP and arc’s PV are anything to go by, Caulifla has quite the power behind that small frame.

Considering this episode is another attempt on the continuous redemption of Gohan, it isn’t the stand-out content of this outing. Even Beerus and Whis’ interactions, plus Yamcha’s little bit at the end, are more engaging than the filler-esque training. The promise of Gohan and Piccolo working together as a pair in the tournament does inspire some hope, but the beat-downs on Gohan as of late are not making it look too positive. Hopefully this is all a build-up to a wildly triumphant moment of victory in the tournament. Speaking of the tournament as well, it is becoming more and more likely that the end result will be pretty moot – as in, nobody gets erased. The character building for all the other universes, especially Cabba and company, would just be completely wiped out. Just think of the number of times Dragon Ball has brought a villain or rival back to be used again at a later date (too many to list).

Episode Score
7.1/10 (Alright)

Extra thoughts:

  • Continuing the naming tradition of saiyans, the new female saiyan from Universe 6 is named Caulifla, or cauliflower. Goes well with Cabba, doesn’t it?
  • Considering this is training between Gohan and Piccolo, it reminds me… why is there a moon? Was it restored with the planet after it was destroyed by Buu or otherwise? That would make the most sense.
  • The classic dinosaur and his tail being cut off is a wonderful call-back to the olden days of Dragon Ball Z and Gohan having to survive on his own.
  • A short-list of enemies that have returned to be used again in the future: Yamcha, Tien, Pilaf, Piccolo, Vegeta, Frieza, the Androids, and Buu.
