Although the team may already be obvious, these episodes are still making it fun to experience their recruitment. The tournament edges ever closer.
“Son Goku The Recruiter Invites Krillin and No. 18”
This episode bodes very well for the upcoming Tournament of Power. If the writers are putting so much thought in to the set-up and recruitment of each character, we could be in for a smart and exciting battle royal. The animation is nothing to complain about either, with some amazing effects during the kamehameha scene. The only questions still in our minds going forward revolve around pacing – it sure is taking a long while to set up this tournament. Will it be the most drawn out hour of fighting in the history of Dragon Ball (unlikely) or will it be comparatively short after a lengthy lead in? With episodes like this pushing towards zero-hour, there is a lot to live up to.
This recruitment episode features Krillin and his awesome wife, No. 18. It seems like Krillin has his hands full as a cop, but one day of vacation to save the universe really isn’t asking that much. It’s interesting that 18 only cares about some kind of reward, although she is pretty suspicious of Goku and Gohan and how serious they’re playing this whole situation. Krillin might not know the stakes yet, but he does know that his pride is on the line against opponents like Gohan and Goku. Fortunately he has the smarts, and the techniques, that can be useful during a ring out-only style tournament. With a team of saiyans, and his wife, behind him, he looks poised to contribute.
It’s a little worrisome that Goku just straight up didn’t understand the concept of a battle royal. Was he really going to be powering up a kamehameha in the tournament without wondering if anyone would break in? It’s cool to see it here with No. 18 coming to Krillin’s aid, but seriously, Goku is a liability sometimes. The final moments give us an interesting glimpse in to the android’s relationship post-Cell. That being said, it’s only the occasional phone call. This doesn’t bode well for 17’s recruitment, if he is content no longer being a fighter. Perhaps a certain existential threat to all of his new wilderness buddies could give him a nudge in the right direction. The last we’ve seen of him was during the Kid Buu saga as Goku ask’s the Earth’s inhabitants for their energy – after being wished back several times with the dragon balls. A mysterious character indeed.
