Dragon Ball Super 83

This tournament arc is fun and all, but I can’t wait to see the future of Dragon Ball with Pan at the helm and her new best friend from the Briefs family. Move over, Goten and Trunks.

“From the Universe 7 Representing Team! Who Are the Strongest Ten?!”

After several episodes in a row of intense action and pretty cool fight sequences, it’s time for a little downtime. Not that there isn’t still work to be done in recruiting for the tournament, but one hour out of the day can safely be taken up with food and baby shenanigans. Actually, think of this more as Vegeta’s recruitment episode. He puts up his some legitimate dad concerns for just skipping town when his wife is about to have a baby, but this universe has gods of destruction and super powers and androids and Arale – waiting for labor is small business.

The big news of the episode is the addition to the Briefs family! Looks like the new generation of saiyans (sorry Trunks and Goten, you’re old now) will be full of girl-power! Thanks to Whis’ hilariously convenient ability to just will the baby out of Bulma with no effort or pain, something she doesn’t quite thank him for enough, Trunks now has a little sister. As for the name, (Update Mar 27) the Briefs family tradition of naming their kids after types of underwear (seriously) continues, as Bulma has decided on Bra. Definitely better than Vegeta’s idea, probably, but it could have been fun for her to have some kind of vegetable related name. Speaking of saiyan girl power, we have yet to see Pan since the somewhat time skip of Bulma’s pregnancy. She must be up and hobbling around by now!

After such a happy occasion, Goku has new motivation to get back to the task at hand. The crew reasons through the most logical choices for participants in the tournament of power, and despite some power discrepancies their logic is actually quite sound. This isn’t just a one-on-one style match-up of pure power. Each fighter will need to be smart and have some tricks up their sleeves to contribute to the greater team effort and get as many opponents off the stage as possible. Power might help, but it clearly won’t be the most defining factor of this tournament. Quite a smart way for this series to play with the problem of over-powering its main cast. With Tien the only candidate that they haven’t decided on, the fighters will be Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Buu, Androids 17 and 18, Krillin, Master Roshi, and Piccolo. It’s a solid line-up, but there’s just something missing. Maybe the answer to all their troubles will show up right before the tournament, like a true hero.

Episode Score
7.8/10 (Good)

Summary: Bulma and Vegeta’s baby girl Bra is “born”, and Goku is off on his quest to find enough participants for the Tournament of Power. Sorry, Yamcha.

Dragon Ball Super - 83 - Magic Birth

Extra thoughts:
– Some of the character stills were really bad in this episode, some were amazing… but who cares anymore.
– Dad Vegeta is the best.
– Oh look at all this great food! Pretty sure there isn’t anything else to do.
– There are only 28 planets with intelligent life in the universe!?
– Oh poor Monaka.
– They’re being pretty generous with Krillin’s abilities.
– Vegeta just wet his pants… in the good way.
– Holy what Whis just magicked that baby out of her.
– I see a super saiyan girl kicking Trunks’ butt in the future.
– Classic Yamcha.
– Update Mar 27, Bra was all too obviously mistranslated as Bulla, in a similar fashion to how Bulma should be Bloomer.
