If you’re going to steal power from Goku, you better have a place to put all of it. Just like his brothers, Bergamo relies too heavily on a gimmick.
“Bergamo the Crusher vs. Son Goku! Which One Wields the Limitless Power!?”
It is finally Goku’s turn to show off in this exhibition round. Interesting set-up for this match though, with Bergamo essentially saving the universes for a moment and pinning all the blame for anything bad that will happen on Goku. Could Goku and Universe 7 really be the villains of this arc? Seems like it, and Goku doesn’t even seem to really care. Hard to believe that Goku would dismiss such accusations so casually after fighting all these years in the name of good. In fact it even seems clearly selfish of him just wanting a good fight. There is a certain confidence though, and if he has his eyes on the prize then we can assume what he has in mind for the super dragon balls.
Once again it takes more than a gimmick to beat a super saiyan, and in this case a super saiyan god super saiyan. That transformation notably startles the rest of the gods in attendance who were sure that Universe 7 was full of weaklings. This brings us back to the concept of average power level over an entire universe. It’s not exactly a solid metric when 99.99~% of all living things are bottom of the barrel and two people are more powerful than gods. It’ll be quite a rude awakening for the rest of the universes. This also isn’t the first time that Goku fights a power-absorbing enemy and defeats him by overloading him with power, but the action and animation are good enough that it’s worth seeing in this new way.
And so the rules of the Tournament of Power are revealed to us. Interesting situation we have here, in that it’s not even really a tournament – just one big battle royale with over 80 participants! That’s kind of a new and interesting shift from the things we’ve seen before, but if it’s just one big, flat circle like the image shown it could turn out really quite stupid. Sure there will be teams and not just a giant free-for-all, but I have my doubts. Most universes will also be gunning for Universe 7 right off the bat, so there will have to be a way to work that out. Too bad it doesn’t look like it’ll be starting any time soon, as Goku has another challenger in front of him.
Summary: Goku gives it his all in the face of annihilation and manages to secure a bitter-sweet victory. So concludes the exhibition match… or does it?
– It really is all Goku’s fault.
– He’s Iron Fist!
– Even Goku knows that nothing in this show is original anymore.
– He ain’t bluffing…
– 48 minutes? Hey that’s about two episodes!
– A battle royale!?
– Why bother fighting this guy? Get to the real fight.
– Calling it now. Goku wins the tournament and wishes all the universes back with the super dragon balls.
