It’s the official start of the summer anime season! Wait, Mob Psycho 100 still isn’t out yet? How can this be!? Well, I guess we’ll just have to make due with all the other great shows that have aired this week.
Don’t worry, Mob Psycho 100 airs July 12, so it’s fast approaching. Lots of hype! This week has a special surprise to it though, with the next installment of Brotherhood Final Fantasy XV! As per usual, be sure to click on the episode titles to read the full review and check out all the screenshots!
There were also some new OP and ED’s this week!

Dragon Ball Super 50 “Goku VS Black! The Road Towards The Sealed Future” – Super has been airing for a whole year now! It seemed like less than a month ago the show was merely starting – mainly because this arc is the only thing that matters so far. Albeit, it is fun to see Beerus and Whis here in this time-traveling scandal. They offer an interesting perspective on something that is actual outside of even their bounds. We’ll have to see where this new Kaoishin (Supreme Kai) comes from, and what the real deal is with Black. I still don’t really think it’s Goku, and there are a few hints that point in that direction. There’s even compelling reason for the heroes to return to the future. Just keep it coming Super, you’re finally nailing it after a year of waiting!

Re:Zero 14 “The Sickness Called Despair” – Subaru still thinks he can solve every problem – and that he is the only one able to save a ‘hopeless’ Emilia. Perhaps he should start listening to all the advice coming his way from the people of this world! Seriously, he gets told so many things that would help his cause, and ignores every single one of them. Not much to say about this entry, as it was essentially a continuation of last week’s “Subaru downfall”. That and a lot of people are going to have a big crusch on Crush (close enough), as she seems to be the most compelling and competent leader in the selection so far – sorry Emilia and Felt. Come on Subaru, just reset things already, it’s your only real skill.

Brotherhood Final Fantasy XV 03 “Sword and Shield” – These looks in to the start of each character’s friendship with Noctis are being handled masterfully. This time it’s the burly shield of the king, Gladio (or Gladiolus). He seemed like the most friendly with our main hero through all of the game promotion, stepping in to help out and coordinating strikes more than the other characters – but it seems this has not always been the case. It was a little tropey how Noct softened the heart of his biggest hater, but it definitely works. It also sets up an interesting dynamic with Iris, Galdio’s sister, for the years to come! I see an osananajimi and unrequited love coming on.
Episode Score: 9/10 (Great)

ReLIFE 02 “Communication Skills: Zero” – Despite this show having aired all at once online, we’ll still be including its episode reactions here for the week that each episode actually airs on TV! The full reviews may be out a lot faster, but this will be here if you like to keep to a schedule. As a comedy, this show just keeps on delivering. The set-up is right on for the nostalgia-bait and fish-out-of-water genres. Most adults have nightmares about suddenly being back in high school and having not prepared for a test! Looks like the character development will be pretty good, but it could be all for not – everyone will lose their memories of Arata at the end of the year. There’s definitely some shady practices going on at the ReLIFE corporation, whoever they might be.
Episode Score: 8.1/10 (Very Good)

91 Days 01 “Night of the Murder” – First Impressions – The fact that I can’t remember any other note-able American mafia-based anime is pretty interesting. The genre has definitely been worked to death here in the west since The Godfather – and that’s likely where a lot of the influence is stemming from. There are some interestingly worked in Japanese tropes as well, so it still feels pretty distinctly anime, and the setting, although prohibition America, seems rather European in design. The plot itself looks like it will hold up well, and it will be interesting to see how complicated the emotional aspects of infiltrating those Avilio wants revenge upon will work out. The pacing, also a lot like The Godfather, comes across quite well here.
Episode Score: 7.5/10 (Good)
Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken – Final Impressions – This was a super fun little series, with some real comical and emotional weight. It deals with some interesting adult story-lines, from marriage and children to workplace woes. The best part is, there’s another season! I’ll definitely be watching that as well. It’s just so impressive how much character a short, few minute episode can build. I was genuinely happy for them during those final moments that I may have even shed a tear. Maybe.
Series Score: 8.8/10 (Very Good)
